Nowitzki ejected, but Mavs still rally to beat Clippers
Basketball Betting Lines
03/23/2010 -
Dallas, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Kidd scored a season-best 26 points to go
along with 12 assists, and Dallas rolled in the fourth quarter without an
ejected Dirk Nowitzki, as the Mavericks downed the Los Angeles Clippers,
106-96.
"It was a nice birthday gift and a good birthday and I'm glad we got the win,"
Kidd said on his 37th birthday.
Nowitzki scored 18 points before getting two quick technical fouls with 9:16
left in the third quarter. The Mavericks were in front, 65-56, at the time of
his ejection, but then had to rally in the fourth to snap a brief two-
game losing skid.
Jason Terry donated 14 points with seven assists, while Shawn Marion and
Brendan Haywood each tallied 12 points. Haywood added 10 rebounds as well in
the win.
With the victory, Dallas extended its edge to four games over idle San Antonio
in the Southwest Division and tied Northwest Division-leading Denver for the
second seed in the Western Conference.
Drew Gooden tied a season-high with 26 points and grabbed a season-best 20
rebounds, while Chris Kaman notched 22 points and nine rebounds for LA. Rasual
Butler and Eric Gordon added 16 points apiece for the Clippers, who have lost
two in a row and 10 of 11 games.
"He was good," Clippers head coach Kim Hughes said of Gooden. "He faded at the
end, I think a little bit of fatigue. I thought he played very hard, he
competed the whole time."
The Clippers made just 5-of-22 shots in the final period, while Kidd scored
half of his points and Dallas made 10-of-19 shots. Trailing by one point
entering the final period, Kidd tossed an alley-oop pass to Rodrigue Beaubois
for the lead Dallas did not relinquish. The edge grew to nine at 89-80 on
Kidd's second trey off the period, then he converted a layup for an 11-point
edge, and another trey for a 96-80 game. Another Kidd basket on a driving
layup gave him 13 points in the first five-plus minutes and capped a 14-0
scoring blitz for an insurmountable 98-80 game.
The Clippers pulled within eight at 104-96 on a 7-0 stretch, capped by a pair
of Gooden free throws with 1:21 left, but the Clippers ran out of time.
Dallas scored 13 points in the final three minutes of the first quarter,
taking a 32-24 edge into the second period. The edge grew to 16 at 49-33 on a
Haywood short jumper with just over four minutes to play, and the margin stood
at 62-48 at the half.
The Clippers stormed back, going on a 13-4 scoring flurry after Nowitzki's
ejection to tie the game at 69-69 on a Gooden slam. Gooden's driving layup in
the closing seconds gave the visitors a 77-76 lead going into the fourth
period.
