Kansas and Missouri put wraps on regular season

03/06/2010 -
Columbia, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With the Big 12 title already secured, the
second-ranked Kansas Jayhawks close out their regular-season in Columbia, as
they take on one of their most bitter rivals in the Missouri Tigers.
Bill Self's Jayhawks have gone an impressive 14-1 in league play thus far, but
didn't clinch the outright conference crown until Wednesday's 82-65 win over
fifth-ranked Kansas State. The win put some distance between Kansas and its
only league loss of the season, an 85-77 setback at Oklahoma State last
weekend.
The Tigers are 10-5 in Big 12 action and have won four of their last five
games, including a hard-fought 69-67 overtime affair at Iowa State on Tuesday.
This is the 273rd all-time meeting between these two longtime rivals, with
Kansas holding a 168-94 series advantage. The Jayhawks are looking for the
regular-season sweep after posting a rather easy 84-65 win in Lawrence back on
January 25th.
The Jayhawks took a seven-point lead into halftime and then held the Wildcats
to a mere .292 shooting over the final 20 minutes, capturing the Big 12
regular-season title with a 17-point win. Freshman Xavier Henry led the
offensive charge with 19 points. Sherron Collins added 17, while Tyshawn
Taylor and Markieff Morris chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Kansas shot a modest .433 in the first half, but upped that to .619 after the
break to hold off Kansas State. Ku has enjoyed stellar play at both ends of
the floor and the result is a national-best +18.6 scoring margin. The team
ranks among the nation's best in terms of scoring as well at 82.4 ppg (third
nationally), while converting 48.8 percent from the floor. Collins is the
catalyst for this team, leading the way both in scoring (15.4 ppg) and assists
(4.3 apg). Henry has been awesome in his first season in Lawrence, adding 14.2
ppg. Marcus Morris (12.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Cole Aldrich (11.4 ppg, 9.8 rpg)
provide more than enough frontcourt balance.
The Tigers also rely on their play at the offensive end to win games. Missouri
is averaging a solid 78.9 ppg thus far, while converting 44.7 percent from the
floor, including 38.1 percent from behind the arc. The team is averaging eight
three-pointers per game and is connecting on 72.5 percent from the free-throw
line. Kim English is the top offensive threat at 14.1 ppg. Marcus Denmon is
next in line at 11.3 ppg, followed closely by Laurence Bowers and his 10.1
ppg. Zaire Taylor went the length of the floor and hit a bank-shot as time
expired giving the Tigers a thrilling overtime victory in Ames this week. J.T.
Tiller led the way with a season-high 17 points, while Denmon came off the
bench with 16, followed by Michael Dixon's 10. English struggled however,
hitting just 2-of-8 from the floor and finishing the game with just five
points.

“You play to win the game!”
Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.
The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.
The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.
Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?
Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.
New York Giants betting lines
Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.
Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.
Dallas Cowboys betting lines
Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.
The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.
Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.
Oakland Raiders betting lines
This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.
First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”
The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.
Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
