Phoenix, AZ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Amare Stoudemire scored 36 points, pulled down
12 rebounds and sank all 14 of his free throw attempts, as Phoenix ran past
the New Orleans Hornets, 120-106, at US Airways Center.
Jason Richardson had 20 points, while Steve Nash tallied 13 points and 12
assists as the Suns won for the ninth time in 12 contests. They moved a half-
game ahead of San Antonio, into sixth place in the Western Conference.
"We definitely wanted to set the tone early," Stoudemire said. "It was a very
important game for us and we came out with the intensity from the start and
we've just got to keep the momentum going and keep improving as a unit."
Jared Dudley also scored 13 and Robin Lopez had 10 for Phoenix, which is 2-2
on a season-long seven-game homestand.
Marcus Thornton scored 28 for the Hornets, who have lost three straight and
seven of their last eight games. David West ended with 24 points and seven
rebounds in defeat. Emeka Okafor chipped in 15 and 12, while Darren Collison
contributed 13 points with 10 assists.
"It's tough. Amare took over the game in the third quarter," Thornton said.
"We made some silly turnovers and that's like giving them two points every
time. We just have to work through it and be professionals."
Phoenix, which shot 57.5 percent for the game, hit 15-of-22 field goal tries
in the opening quarter, racing to a 34-22 lead after 12 minutes. Included in
that was a 16-2 burst. Nash and Richardson hit three-pointers during the
flurry, which ended on Stoudemire's jumper for a 27-11 cushion.
The Suns led by double digits for the majority of the second quarter until the
Hornets whittled the margin to four, the last time at 50-46 on a West short
jumper with 1:11 left. It was 55-49 in favor of the Suns at the half.
New Orleans took a brief 57-55 edge, but the Suns scored the next seven and
didn't trail the rest of the way. Richardson's reverse layup extended the lead
to 69-59 with 7:09 remaining in the quarter, and the difference stood at 83-71
moving to the fourth.
A dunk from Stoudemire extended the lead to 94-74 with 10:23 to go, and the
double-digit margin remained until the final horn sounded.
Game Notes
The Suns have won four of the last five games against the Hornets following a
six-game series losing streak. Phoenix (3-1) secured a win in the series for
the first time since 2006-07...The Suns have won seven of their nine home
games since the All-Star break...Nash played in his 1,000th career regular
season game. He is the 10th active player to reach the mark...This was the
start of a five-game road trip for the Hornets, who have lost their last seven
away games...James Posey (flu) and Peja Stojakovic (lower abdominal strain)
sat out for New Orleans.

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. "He's doing everything that I'm asking him, that our coaches are asking him to do. I don't have one single complaint how he's carrying himself."
After one workout, wide receiver Devard Darling declared Cassel "a breath of fresh air."
"He has a lot of swagger, a lot of confidence. It's good for us," said Darling. "We trust in him that he's going to go out there and lead us all the way."

Trapped on the bench behind Heisman winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC and then unable to unseat Super Bowl MVP Brady at New England, Cassel seemed destined to be a backup all his life. As Brady was helped off the field last September, Cassel seized the opportunity he'd been waiting for since high school.
In his only sustained action since his teens, he hit 349 of 555 passes for 3,949 yards at New England. He had 23 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions as the Patriots, who had gone unbeaten through the regular season the year before, finished 11-5 and out of the playoffs.
Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South. Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC. The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game. For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft. Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.
1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign? New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1. Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT. Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season. With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round. LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems. If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season. The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach. The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub. High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career. With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season. The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age. It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot. This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
