Hughes ready for spring training

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Phil Hughes has an outside chance of making the New York Yankees starting rotation at 20 years old.

``I feel like I'm ready to go to spring training full speed,'' Hughes said Thursday. ``I'm not going to rule anything out.''

Hughes spent the offseason working out at the Yankees spring training complex and has been throwing off a mound the past three weeks.

Selected by the Yankees in the first round of the 2004 amateur draft, Hughes went 10-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 21 starts with Double-A Trenton after compiling a 1.80 ERA in five outings at Class A Tampa last year.

``He's a uniquely talented character,'' Yankees senior vice president Mark Newman said. ``Anybody that has seen him understands that. There's a calmness to his demeanor that should be helpful.''

The Yankees plan to go slowly with Hughes, who appears likely to start the season at Triple-A Scranton.

``The best circumstance is we give more time,'' Newman said.

Hughes is projected to pitch around 180 innings this season, up from 146 last year.

Notes: Josh Phelps, bidding to win a spot as the right-handed-hitting part of a first-base platoon, arrived for early workouts and took batting practice. ``I'm ready to go and let it all out,'' Phelps said. He hit.308 with 24 homers and 90 RBIs for Triple-A Toledo, and the Yankees selected him from Baltimore in December's winter meeting draft.
