The Russian star was unable to break Becker's serve and fell in 72 minutes. Davydenko, who plays his worst tennis on grass, returned to action this week after being sidelined with a broken wrist since mid-March. One of last week's French Open semifinalists lost on Thursday, as sixth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer gave way to German wild card Mischa Zverev 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) in 2 hours, 17 minutes. Melzer reached his first-ever Grand Slam semi last week before losing to new world No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Friday's other quarters will pit eighth-seeded former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt against German Andreas Beck, Zverev versus Becker in an all-German affair, and Slovak Lukas Lacko against German Philipp Petzschner. Five of the eight men still standing here hail from the host nation.
