Ex-Oilers owner pleads to bankruptcy perjury

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) -Former Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington has pleaded guilty to perjury in a Southern California bankruptcy fraud case.

The 68-year-old Pocklington entered the plea in a federal court in Riverside on Thursday. Under a plea deal, he'll be sentenced in August to probation and home detention.

Pocklington was arrested at his Palm Desert home last year on allegations that he concealed assets after filing for bankruptcy in 2008. He claimed nearly $20 million in debts and about $3,000 in assets.

Pocklington acknowledged he concealed two bank accounts and failed to disclose two storage units.

Pocklington's Oilers won five titles in seven years before he sold the franchise in 1998. A decade earlier he surprised the hockey world by trading Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
