Bears and Bucs battle for Atlantic Sun Tournament title
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
03/06/2010 -
Macon, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A bid to the NCAA Tournament is up for grabs as
the fifth-seeded East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the sixth-seeded Mercer
Bears meet in the title game of the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
Mercer beat third-seeded Belmont in Thursday's quarterfinal round and knocked
off second-seeded Jacksonville last night by a 66-63 final. The Bears are now
an even 16-16 overall and are aiming for their third conference tourney crown.
The most recent title was captured way back in 1985.
As for East Tennessee State, its lone A-Sun Conference championship was earned
last season, as the Bucs defeated Jacksonville easily to punch their ticket to
the "Big Dance". ETSU is 19-14 this season, and the team is coming off
yesterday's 69-64 decision over eighth-seeded Kennesaw State.
The Bucs were 8-0 versus Mercer prior to this season, but the Bears won both
meetings between the two teams this year.
Daniel Emerson was tremendous for Mercer in Friday's victory over
Jacksonville, as he racked up 21 points and 15 rebounds in 37 minutes of
action. Jeff Smith netted 18 points for the Bears, who turned the ball over
only nine times and connected on 19-of-24 free throws. Strong defense was key
to the victory as well, as Mercer held Jacksonville to 34.9 percent shooting
from the floor. James Florence, who averages a team-high 18.0 ppg for the
Bears, was held to 1-of-11 shooting from the field by Jacksonville. It will
clearly be interesting to see how he responds tonight. Emerson provides 15.6
ppg for a Mercer squad that is posting 76.5 ppg while allowing 75.2 ppg.
Micah Williams has been the leading scorer for ETSU in three straight outings,
raising his average to 12.5 ppg. Tommy Hubbard still leads the Bucs with 14.1
ppg, and he is ripping down 8.3 rpg to go along with 53 steals. The third and
final double-digit scorer for the club is Justin Tubbs with 11.8 ppg. ETSU is
generating 69.1 ppg while allowing 66.5 ppg to foes. In the victory over
Kennesaw State on Friday, Williams posted 20 points, while Hubbard finished
with 18. Sheldon Cooley contributed 11 points off the bench for the Bucs, who
forced 17 turnovers and hit six more shots from the floor than the opposition.

Marlins could start season without No. 2 starter Johnson
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.
Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .
''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''
Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.
He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.
''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''
Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.
Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.
With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
